Padri Ki Haveli
Church · the Blessed Virgin Mary · Patna City, Patna, Bihar
Catholics come to worship at Bihar's mother church; others come for its history and its Mother Teresa...
The oldest church in Patna and in Bihar, first built in 1713 and redesigned in 1772 by the Venetian architect Tirreto. It is a Roman Catholic cathedral of the Patna diocese, in a neoclassical (often described as Gothic) style; its large cathedral bell is the main draw. It survived the attack of Nawab Mir Qasim in 1763 and the events of 1857. Mother Teresa trained here before beginning her mission. Mangle's Tank, a lake dug 1856-75 nearby, exposed ancient brick walls thought to belong to Pataliputra.
