Sacred tree · Somnath (Shiva) at the village temple; the gachhi itself is a mango orchard · Saurath village, Madhubani, Bihar
Thousands of Maithil Brahmins gather for arranged-marriage matching, and pilgrims worship at the...
A 22-acre mango orchard where the Saurath Sabha assembles, plus a Somnath temple in the village. Tradition holds that after Mahmud of Ghazni destroyed the original Somnath temple in AD 1025 two Maithil Brahman brothers brought the lingam here, and that an 18th-century Maithil king built the Somnath temple at the spot. The Madhaweshwar Nath Mahadev Mandir stands on the Sabha Gachhi campus - a large green complex with a dharamshala for devotees, a large pond and a paved ghat, with kirtishila inscriptions - built by King Madhav Singh of Mithila and completed in 1832-33 under King Chhatra Singh.
