Lomas Rishi Cave

Cave · Ajivika origin; a Krishna murti was installed by the Maukhari king Anantavarman · Sultanpur, Jehanabad, Bihar

Visitors come for the facade; devotional use of the cave itself is historical rather than current

The best-known of the Barabar caves, cut into monolithic granite about 30 km north of Gaya, with Sudama cave immediately to its left. Its entrance carries the earliest example of the chaitya arch, an ogee-shaped hut-style facade with a frieze of elephants advancing toward stupas, imitating wooden construction and setting the pattern for all later Indian rock-cut facades. Unlike the neighbouring caves it carries no dedication inscription. ASI Monument of National Importance.
