Chirand
Ancient site · Chirand, Saran, Bihar
Pilgrims come for the Chyavana-ashrama association and the annual fair; the mound itself draws visitors...
A large prehistoric mound with stratified Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Iron Age settlement running from about 2500 BCE into the Pala period, the earliest Stone Age culture excavated in India, with quantities of pottery, tools and animal remains. On top of the mound stands a mosque built in 1503 CE by Sultan Abul Muzaffar Hussain Shah, which reuses pilasters from earlier Hindu temples. The place is identified with the ashram of the sage Chyavana. A state "Chirand Mahotsava" and a civilisations theme park have been proposed.
