Kalpvas at Simaria
A month living in a tent on the river, eating once a day
What it is
Through the month of Kartik, families move out of their houses and live in tents on the sand at Simaria ghat on the Ganga. One meal a day, bathing before dawn, readings in the afternoon. Thousands keep it. It ends at Kartik Purnima.
Why it matters
Kalpvas is usually associated with Prayagraj. Bihar keeps it too, at Simaria, and almost nobody outside the district has heard of it.
How it works
- The camp forms on the sand as the water drops after the monsoon.
- A day is: bathe before dawn, one meal, readings, sleep early.
- It breaks up at Kartik Purnima, the same full moon that opens Sonepur.
